What they do
Based in Hawaii, Unrulr is an engaging digital platform that students can use to share their stories of learning, document accomplishments, offer reflections on topics and get feedback from the wider learning community on their work.
In developing this platform, the Unrulr team have moved intentionally away from measurement by test scores and instead, aim to enable a pathway to mastery learning. In turn, Unrulr appears to be part of the new wave of edtech that is behind the current push for reform in education, reimagining the way we assess growth and achievement in students.
Why it matters
In order to thrive in the 21st century, students need more than traditional academic learning. Instead, what practitioners and educators around the world have begun to focus on, is the development of skills that demonstrate collaboration, communication and problem solving. By focusing on the development of these skills, students will likely be more adept at handling the challenges of our modern world and succeed in the swiftly evolving digital economy.
As we enter into the fourth industrial revolution, it is likely that a number of jobs will simply become obsolete. Therefore, rather than continue to build curriculums based on an outdated model of the labour market, innovators within the education space are instead working on tools that can complement classroom learning and extend this experience to an engaging real-world context.
Traction so far
Founded in 2019, Unrulr have already had a significant record of traction within their home state of Hawaii and continue to grow across the continental U.S., onboarding 27 schools in less than two years. Unrulr are now looking to further develop the platform and expand into new markets.
