Organization’s Background and Achievements

This project is one of the 2024-2025 WISE Prize for Education semi-finalists.

SayKid was established in 2017 in the United States by DeLonn and Maria Crosby. With expertise in technology and early learning, the founders recognized the need for screen-free, child-centered solutions that promote tangible play, appeal to diverse learners, and strengthen relationships among students, parents, and teachers. By combining voice technology, AI, and a plush ToyBot, SayKid helps children aged 3-9 learn in an actively-engaging way – without screens.

Some recent successes include:

  • Grand Prize Winner, Alexa EdTech Challenge
  • Harvard Early Child Innovation Challenge Finalist (1 of 15)
  • Winner, MN Cup “Moonshot” Prize (biggest breakthrough innovation)
  • Winner, Tech.MN Voyager Award (top bootstrapped tech start-up in MN)
  • Top 20 Startups to Watch (Minne Inno)
  • Fedex 100 Small Business

New Solution: Numeracy Curriculum

SayKid proposes the development of a numeracy-focused curriculum to complement its current literacy offerings to accelerate foundational learning in early stage learners.

Potential Impact and Prospects

With Alexa available in more than 100 countries, SayKid has the potential to not only translate content to other countries but also contextualize it to specific locales. Beyond schools and homes, the company has been working with leading play-based organizations to promote real-world, hands-on play. Most recently, SayKid has collaborated with the Minnesota Children’s Museum to explore the development of child-led, play-based stories.

Addressing WISE Prize for Education Challenges

  • Teaching of Arabic Language
  • Foundational Literacies ☑️

The solution directly addresses these challenges by leveraging AI to create personalized reading experiences and by focusing on foundational literacy skills. This approach not only uses AI in education but also tackles one of the most crucial aspects of early education: reading proficiency.
