Taleemabad

About the Project

This project is one of the 2021 WISE Awards winners.

Context and Issue

Pakistan has the second highest number of out-of-school children in the world – 22.5 million – and of those that do attend school, many exhibit stunted learning levels, with 48% of them unable to read a simple text in their native language. 66.8% do not make the transition from primary to secondary school, access to education institutes being a major issue. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the situation has only worsened.

Low-cost private schools are the unsung heroes of the education sector, providing quality education to nearly 40% of all primary school students for as low as $2 – $5 per month. However, these schools are under-resourced and have a small financial runway. If these aren’t empowered, it would break our education system’s back.

Solution and Impact

The Unbundled Model:

Taleemabad (Urdu for ‘city of education’) is a highly localised and contextualised animated series aligned with the National Curriculum of Pakistan that teaches children English, Urdu, Maths and Science across the K-6 spectrum. Taleemabad is:

• Broadcasted on National Television
• Available on the Taleemabad App as a holistic learning solution
• Engaging Books for physical practise

The Bundled Model:

Taleemabad Schools: Schools take on the Taleemabad name and the entire suite of products, including but not limited to teacher training, mobile app, in-class content, school management system and books. We help schools set up blended learning models and help them attract business.

Impact:

• approved by the Ministry of Education
• ranked #1 on the Play Store in the Education Apps category in Pakistan
• reduced dropouts in schools by 70%
• increased test scores by 31%

Future Developments

We plan to create an educational ecosystem where children wake up in the morning, watch Taleemabad on tv as they get ready for school, attend a Taleemabad school, come back home and watch a repeat telecast and practice on the Taleemabad App.
