How widespread is child marriage? How do we address this problem? “Every year 15 million girls get married before they are 18 years old.”
HRH Mabel van Oranje, chair of Girls Not Brides: The Global Partnership to End Child Marriage talks about how we can sensitise populations and why we should mobilise ressources to end child marriage. In this Q&A session, she also talks about the links between girls’ education and child marriage: every year girls are taken out of school to be married, and inversely, girls who have had access to education will be less likely to get married so young.
HRH Mabel van Oranje is also co-founder and the executive chair of the European Council on Foreign Relations and a member of the (advisory) boards of the Coalition for the International Criminal Court, Crisis Action, Global Witness, the Malala Fund, the Open Society Foundations and The Elders.
