Artificial Intelligence is reshaping education globally, and across Africa, Universities are beginning to engage with AI not just as a tool, but as a strategic opportunity to reimagine learning, expand access, and drive innovation. Drawing on insights from nearly 4,000 stakeholders, the report reveals a sector at a turning point: AI adoption is growing, but uneven. This study, led by WISE in collaboration with The Education Collaborative (Ashesi University) UM6P, and AfriLabs, explores how 47 Universities across Africa are adopting AI to enhance learning &teaching, streamline administration, and prepare students for the future of work.
As part of the study, two practical tools were developed to support institutions in their AI journey: an AI-Enabled Digital Maturity Scorecard, designed to help universities self-assess their AI adoption across five key pillars and a Pocket Guide outlining how to administer the scorecard, including a needs-assessment questionnaire.
