Assistant Professor

Gábor Scheiring is an Assistant Professor of Comparative Politics at Georgetown University in Qatar. He previously served as a Visiting Fellow at Harvard University’s Center for European Studies and as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Cambridge and Bocconi University. His research examines the political economy and lived experiences of contemporary economic transformations. He studies how economic shocks create precarity, leading to mental and physical suffering, and how these processes affect democratic stability. His book The Retreat of Liberal Democracy (Palgrave, 2020), the winner of the BASEES 2021 Book Award, analyzes how working-class dislocation and elite co-optation foster illiberalism in Hungary. His work has appeared in leading journals, including the British Journal of Political Science, Comparative Political Studies, Annual Review of Sociology, Lancet Global Health, and Cambridge Journal of Economics. As a member of the Hungarian Parliament (2010–2014), he advocated for a socially just transition to sustainability.

Dr. Scheiring teaches courses on populism, capitalism, development, and research methods. His teaching focuses on bringing insights from across the social sciences into students’ lived experiences, motivating them to see their commitments as citizens and as social scientists as two sides of the same coin. His courses aim to break down the wall between universities and real-world contexts, preparing students for the next phase of their careers, whether in academia or beyond. Drawing on his experience in applied policymaking, he integrates real-world examples and engages students in simulated exercises that connect theory with social and political practice.
